Turn telemetry into a security decision

Telemetry has a shape

SNMP counters describe device state and interface behavior. Syslog records events and messages. Flow data summarizes conversations. A packet capture preserves packet-level evidence. Baselines and timestamps let you correlate these sources instead of treating every alert as an isolated incident.

Authentication is not authorization

Authentication proves who or what is requesting access. Authorization determines what that identity may do. AAA systems centralize authentication, authorization and accounting. MFA adds another factor, but least privilege still limits the result.

NAC and segmentation reduce blast radius

Network access control can check identity or device posture before granting access. VLANs, ACLs, firewalls and screened subnets limit which zones can communicate. Segmentation does not fix an insecure endpoint, but it can prevent one compromise from becoming a flat-network disaster.

Zero trust is a decision pattern

Zero trust does not mean trusting nothing blindly and then stopping. It means continuously evaluating identity, device, context and requested resource, granting least privilege and recording the decision. A password alone is not a complete trust model.

Concept cards

AAA

Authentication, authorization and accounting for access control.

Checking identity, deciding the room allowed, and recording the visit.

NAC

Network access control that evaluates who or what may join the network.

A security checkpoint before entering a campus.

Zero trust

A least-privilege model that continuously evaluates access instead of assuming trust from location.

Checking the badge at every sensitive door.
